It was an assault on democratic rights, say participants

NEW DELHI: Union Home Secretary V.K. Duggal has asked the Chhattisgarh Government to set up a committee to probe the "attack" on the Rozgar Adhikar Yatra at Balrampur village in Surguja district late on Saturday. The two-member committee would include a Government official. Mr. Duggal asked the Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary to complete the enquiry at the earliest and take appropriate action, according to a delegation of the People's Action for Employment Guarantee that met him here on Monday. It was led by Kamal Mitra Chenoy, Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Mr. Duggal, who asked the delegation to inform the local administration of the details of the meetings to be held, said that he took a serious view of the Balrampur incident and felt that urgent action was necessary, a statement issued by Prof. Chenoy said. Economist Jean Dreze was to address the 300 villagers who had gathered at the spot.
