NEW DELHI: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has asked seven major manufacturers to provide acoustic enclosures to non-compliant diesel generator sets produced and sold after January 1, 2005 in keeping with the revised norms of the Union Environment and Forests Ministry. The enclosures will have to be provided at their cost, failing which they will face legal action. According to a CPCB spokesperson, diesel generator sets (up to 1000 kVA) will have to comply with the noise limit of 75 dBA at one metre from the enclosure surface and should be provided with an integral acoustic enclosure at the manufacturing stage. The revised norms were notified on May 17, 2002 and the manufacturers given time up to January 1, 2005 to adopt the new technology. Non-compliant diesel generator sets were sold in seven out of the 10 factories the CPCB inspected in January and February. Notices under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 were issued to the manufacturers .
