`Poor-quality Punjab rice may find its way into open market'

Staff Reporter

Rice aerated and reconditioned

NAGERCOIL: The Central Warehouse Manager, A. Rajayyan, in a letter to the Kanyakumari Collector, Sunil Paliwal, and the president of Consumer Human Rights Protection Group, S.R. Sriram, has stated that 2,231.669 metric tonnes of boiled rice procured from Moga in Punjab had a high percentage of moisture content and will not be issued for public distribution system in the district, as per the advice of Food Corporation of India officials.

It has been stated in the letter that though 44,553 bags of rice, which were received on January 20, were reconditioned and aerated as per FCI officials' advice, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation declined to take delivery of the stock. However, the Central Warehouse had not issued any quality complaints.

However, Mr. Sriram expressed his apprehension that the poor quality rice might find its way into private market after put up for auction by the warehouse.

The rice was found to be unfit for human consumption when inspected by the functionaries of the Human Rights Protection Group.

The forum has threatened to stage a demonstration in front of the warehouse if the stock was not withdrawn.
