Farmers stage demonstration

Special correspondent

THANJAVUR: By blindfolding themselves, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam members staged a demonstration here on Tuesday urging the State and the Central Governments to take steps to release water from the Mettur dam for `kuruvai' cultivation.

Its general secretary, V. Durai Manickam, led the agitation. R. Thirugnanam, district president, and A. Panneerselvam, district secretary, were present.

They demanded immediate convening of a meeting of the Cauvery River Water Authority and instruct the Karnataka Government to release water.

The authority should take steps to stop the alleged move by the Karnataka Government to increase irrigated area under Kabini ayacut.

The Centre should take steps to get the final award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. The State Government should allot funds for desitling canals, rivers and system tanks in delta districts.
