Ram Niwas Mirdha
NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Ram Niwas Mirdha has taken over as Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. His appointment ends months of uncertainty, which arose from disagreements between the former chairperson, Sonal Mansingh, and members of the Executive Board. Avoiding questions on his appointment, Mr. Mirdha said, "Ask those who have appointed me." He, however, promised to integrate arts into academics and take institutions of art to the common man. Without referring to the disagreements which K.N. Panikar, M. Balamuralikrishna and other board members had with Ms. Mansingh over her alleged "high-handed" behaviour, Mr. Mirdha said: "My experience as Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi has given me some insight into the problems and situations that arise when a large number of eminent artists get together to run an institution. And I am taking up this assignment with great humility, because I'll have to work with a large number of very eminent people, who have devoted their entire life to their chosen art." On the growing gap between the common people and the world of classical arts, Mr. Mirdha said he had taken up the issue at his initial meeting with the akademi officials. "I think one of the main purposes of establishing these akademis is to make our people aware of and take pride in their national heritage."
