Krishna Khaitan tournament

CHENNAI: Over 800 boys and girls, around 1027 matches form the highlight of 15th edition of the Krishna Khaitan Memorial all India junior badminton tournament, the main round phase of which will be held from June 9 to 12 at Nehru indoor stadium.

At a news conference on Monday, Sanjiv Sachdeva, Organsing Secretary said that performance in this tournament and the subsequent one in Kochi would be counted for picking the Indian team for the Asian junior championship to be held in Jakarta from July 11 to 17. Except for Anand Pawar, who anyway would have crossed the age limit for national selection, all other top juniors were expected to take part, he added.

Earlier Sunil Arya, Vice President, Chennai Badminton Association said for the first time there would be participants from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He also touched on the various aspects of the arrangements made. M/s Sunrise Sports are to partially sponsor Yonex imported shuttle while Galada Agro Industries will supply drinking water free of cost to the players. ONGC has come forward to donate Rs. 1.5 lakh towards prize money.

Mr. S. Muralidharan,Chief Referee said in accordance with IBF rules, players would be allowed for the first time to play in coloured clothing. Matches will be held on eight courts.Tamil Nadu's Mohammed Ali will be the Deputy Chief Referee.

Over 300 qualifying matches were held on Tuesday.
