Kausik and Siddhant scalp rated players to join leaders

Chennai: Two unrated players, S.Kausik of Tamil Nadu and Siddhant Mohopatra of Orissa, scalped rated opponents to be among the four leaders in the boys' section with four points each after the fourth round of the 19th Indian Bank-Vels National under-9 chess championship in Chennai on Tuesday.

Kausik, however, was lucky to win a see-saw game against Kumar Sanu of Jharkhand.

The trend of lower rated boys winning continued with Shiven Kosla of Mumbai overcoming Srinath Rao of Raipur after the latter misplaced a rook on the 28th move allowing a brilliant knight sacrifice.

The other FIDE rated player in the lead is Sayantan Das of Bengal who demolished Anand Prabhu of Mumbai very quickly.

Three girls are in lead with four points. Top seed Chandana Priya Reddy used her advanced king in the bishop versus knight ending well to promote her pawn and checkmate Andhra teammate Gomini Shreya in 72 moves.

Priya beats Priyanka

A.R. Priya (AP) latched on to a conceptual mistake from Priyanka Atre to checkmate her in 59 moves. Priyanka could have drawn the pawn down rook ending had she not exchanged rooks.

The unrated Sweety Patel of Gujarat took time to develop her attack into a win against Srinidhi (TN).
