THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The work on Kerala Sports Council's swimming pool in Nandiyode, 35 km from the city, is nearing completion and will be commissioned in two weeks time. The 73-lakh project, jointly undertaken by the KSC and the Nandiyode Grama Panchayath, is expected to be inaugurated by the Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy later this month. There was long-standing demand from Nandiyode Grama Panchayath, that had produced a lot of international swimmers the notable among them being the current national coach S. Pradeep Kumar, for a swimming pool. The project to transform the temple pond to a modern swimming pool was conceived in 1990 but did not materialise for various reasons until the KSC President C. Mohanachandran took initiative. The work on the project began in November 2003 and now the workers are giving finishing touches to the 10-lane swimming pool at Nandiyode. The balancing tank, with a capacity of 1,80,000 litres, and filtration unit have already been installed. A 30-foot well has been dug to provide water for the swimming pool and there are plans to dig another bore well to harness water for the project. As per the agreement between the Nandiyode Panchayath and the KSC, the panchayath provided 1.10 acres of land for building the swimming pool. The KSC will take care of the maintenance of the swimming pool while the panchayath will foot the electricity bill, likely to be around Rs. 35,000 per month.
