CBI to set up SCB unit in Kerala

Staff Reporter

In-principle approval for extension unit in Kochi

KASARAGOD: An office of the Special Crime Branch (SCB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will start functioning in Kochi from next month. The new office, which will function as an extension of the SCB unit in Chennai, will be housed in the State Branch Office of the CBI in Kochi.

The CBI authorities have been considering a proposal to start an extension office of the SCB, Chennai unit, for a long time. The Chennai unit of the SCB deals with the investigation of criminal cases, mostly murder cases, registered in Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

The SCB authorities mooted the proposal for an extension office in Kochi in the wake of the huge volume of murder and related cases investigated by it in the State.

According to sources, over half the volume of cases registered by the unit in Chennai pertains to Kerala.

So, many officials of the unit had to be deputed to Kerala for investigating the cases.

Over 40 Kerala-registered cases are being handled by the SCB and these are in various stages of progress — preliminary report, investigation, charge-sheeted and being tried in the special CBI court in Kochi. Some of the cases include the Moulavi murder case, the double murder case of Chemancherry, the multiple-murder case of Aluva, the Muthanga case and the Kani murder case.

The CBI incurs a huge expense on account of the large-scale deputation of staff to Kerala. Many of the officials are deployed in various parts of the State in connection with the investigation. Once the extension unit at Kochi is set up, the CBI will be able to save a good deal on the allowances paid to the officers, according to a proposal submitted by the SCB authorities.

Apart from conducting investigations, the officers are also required to attend court proceedings in the CBI court also.

But it was only few months ago that the CBI authorities in New Delhi approved, in-principle, the setting up of an extension unit in Kochi. The authorities are in the process of finalising the list of officers who are to be posted in Kochi.

The SCB unit in Kochi will be headed by an officer in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police in the CBI.
