Two partners of chit fund held

Tuticorin: District Crime Branch police on Tuesday arrested two partners of a private chit fund on the charges of cheating customers.

The police said Ramaswamy (53) and his wife were partners of the chit firm which had been functioning here since 1987.

During the fag end of 2004, the company was closed and they failed to give back the deposits to customers. On a complaint from Vincent, a customer, the couple were arrested.

The DCB sleuths are on the lookout for two more persons. - Staff Reporter

Baalu escapes unhurt

PUDUKOTTAI: Union Minister for Shipping T.R. Baalu escaped unhurt when a police escort jeep dashed against the car in which he was travelling at Punakulam in the district on Monday night. The Minister was on his way to Punakulam near Gandarvakottai from Thanjavur when the mishap occurred.

Police sources here said the car driver suddenly applied the brakes on spotting a speed-breaker. The escort jeep that was closely following dashed against the Minister's car from behind. Four police personnel seated inside the jeep sustained injuries and were admitted to a hospital at Thanjavur. The rear glass of the car got damaged. - Staff Reporter

Demonstration by railway mazdoors

CHENNAI: Members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the zonal headquarters here criticising the administration's move to induct de-categorised staff of open line into the ministerial cadre. They alleged that the move would affect the promotion chances of the existing ministerial employees. They also demanded constitution of the Sixth Pay Commission for Central Government employees and payment of Rs. 1,000 as interim relief.

11 held, IMFL bottles seized

DINDIGUL: Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel arrested 11 persons and seized Indian-made foreign liquor bottles smuggled from other States during surprise raids conducted in the past four days. Talking to mediapersons on Tuesday, the PEW Deputy Superintendent of Police, S. Vellaidurai, said a special team conducted raids in different places and seized 142 bottles of IMFL.

C. Muniandi, S. Raman of Nochiodaipatti, I Narayanaswamy (48), N. Muthukaruppan (28), L. Jayaraj (53), Innachimuthu (68), K. Muthumanickam (48), Nagarajan (47), Jayabal (45), P. Rajendran and P. Chidambaram (25) were arrested and remanded to judicial custody. - Staff Reporter

Infant's body found

CUDDALORE: The body of a new-born female child was found abandoned in the toilet of a private hospital here on Tuesday. A sanitary worker who went to clean the toilet in the morning found the body wrapped in a cloth and dumped in a corner. - Special Correspondent

Woman kills baby, herself

SIVAKASI: Sudharani (31), immolated herself after killing her one-and-half-year-old girl baby, Deepa Rani, on Pettai Street in Tiruthangal on Monday night. According to the police, the woman, mother of three children, was bogged down by poverty as her husband, Annamalai, an electrician, was jobless for the last three months. She doused the baby and herself with kerosene and set ablaze. While the baby died on the spot, the mother died at the Government hospital at Sivakasi. - Staff Reporter

New course in Sanskrit

Thanjavur : Rajah's College in Thiruvaiyaru, which has been selected by Bharathidasan University as a nodal centre for teaching Sanskrit, offers one-year diploma course in Sanskrit under correspondence stream from this academic year, says Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, in a press release. There is no age limit. Aspirants should have passed standard X. They have to pay Rs.300 as fee but there is no tuition fee. Applications can be had from T. N. Aravamudhan, Professor, Research and Post Graduate Department of Sanskrit, Rajah's College. — Special Correspondent

Vigyan Rail in Tiruchi

TIRUCHI : The `Vigyan Rail,' a specially designed train highlighting the country's achievements in the field of science and technology, will arrive at Tiruchi Fort station on June 9 and remain there up to June 11.

The train with 18 coaches would have exhibits and visual materials displaying significant strides made since independence in 12 coaches.

There is no entry fee and the train would be kept open between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The train would leave for Madurai later. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 53.37 feet today. The inflow was 2,157 cusecs and the discharge, 1,070 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

Tuticorin: One person was killed and three others sustained injuries when a car went out of control and hit a roadside tree at Nalaattinpudur near here on Monday evening.

The driver, Syed Thamin (45), Abdul Hameed (15), Mohammed Yousuf (4) and Chinnaa (42) were injured in the accident. While the driver succumbed, the rest had recovered after receiving medical treatment. — Staff Reporter

Man arrested

Tuticorin: The police arrested a 54-year-old man for allegedly stealing firewood worth Rs.1,500 from a poromboke land at Pandaravilai near here on Monday. Police said that the arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by Nainar, Village Administrative Officer, Perunkulam. Eral police recovered the firwood from the culprit. — Staff Reporter

4 held in assault case

Tuticorin: The police have registered cases against four persons, including a panchayat president, for allegedly assaulting a man at Kovilpatti on Sunday night.

Police said Ayyasamy, president, Pandavarmangalam, along with Samidurai, Anburaj and Manimaran assaulted Sekhar for having sent petitions to higher authorities about mismanagement at the panchayat. The accused assaulted Sekhar and later took away his belongings — a 10-sovereign chain, watch, cell phone and Rs.50,000 in cash — from his house.— Staff Reporter

School buildings inaugurated

DINDIGUL : The State Government has been making massive efforts to enhance infrastructure in schools, said the Transport Minister, R. Viswanathan.

Jewellery stolen

ERODE: Gold jewellery valued at Rs. 1 lakh and Rs.13,000 were stolen from a jewellery shop in Dharapuram Bazaar. According to the police, burglars entered the shop through the roof on Monday night. The shop owner, Mariappan, has preferred a complaint with Dharapuram police.
