A fast track move by Corporation

Move to avoid delay in processing

CHENNAI: To ensure speedy disposal of applications for obtaining building permission, the Chennai Corporation will now process the papers at its zonal offices. This would allow the applicants to submit their papers at the 10 Corporation zonal offices for layout approval or for obtaining building permit within a week.

Senior Corporation officials said the powers of the Chief Engineer and the City Engineer at the civic body's Town Planning Department had been delegated to the Executive Engineers at the zonal level. The move, in deference of the Chief Minister's directions, sought to remove the delay in processing plan permission and facilitating early approval of the applications. The order was passed on Monday and the guidelines will soon be released.

Computer monitoring

The approval process will be computerised and the applicants will be able to view the progress on the Corporation website. Each applicant will be given a unique number to view the status of the application everyday, according to the officials.

A core group of engineers would review the plan approvals given everyday by the zonal offices, to detect any anomaly and intervene immediately . The arrangement was brought in force to increase the accountability of the department towards people and ensure transparency in the administration, they added.
