HYDERABAD: A second Joint Action Committee (JAC) of unions comprising the workforce of the State-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) has come up with suggestions for improving internal efficiency levels. The suggestions were submitted to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in a memorandum by a JAC delegation on Tuesday. The delegation included Ch. Eswara Rao, B. Radhaiah and K. Vijayakumar, general secretaries of the APSRTC Supervisors' Association, Workers Union (affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress) and Karmika Sangh (affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh), respectively.
Demands
The JAC's demands are total reimbursement of concessions to the RTC, reduction of sales tax on diesel from 21.33 per cent to four per cent on par with that paid by the Indian Railways, assistance for erasing accumulated losses of Rs. 1,400 crores by allocating Rs. 300 crores a year for five years, declaring monopoly of nationalised routes of RTC and banning private operators on the said routes and cracking the whip on illicit operators.n The suggestions on improving internal efficiency include working on the old three-tier system, better use of manpower with an eye on efficiency, putting to commercial use landed property belonging to the corporation and generating revenue, conversion into commercial units the Telugu Grameena Kranthi Pathakam bus stations constructed at mandal headquarters and adopting a more scientific and leak-proof system of purchases.
