KOLLAM: An action council has been constituted for launching a campaign against the operations of an allegedly unauthorised clay mine in Nedumbana panchayat, near here. As part of the campaign, the council members lodged a complaint with the District Collector. It has been alleged that the operations at the mine were posing a threat to environment. While there is a stipulation that clay mining should not be done beyond a depth of 50 ft., at Nedumbana, it was being done beyond a depth of 200 ft. More than 400 houses around the mine stand threatened. Mining activity has resulted in wells in the area going dry. Clay dust emitted from the factory is polluting the entire area and causing health problems. Chemicals are being released into the Pallimon River.
