Gargi College to introduce new intranet system

Attempt to help students keep tab on their performance

NEW DELHI: Keeping track of their attendance may not have been a strong point with the youngsters, but Delhi University's Gargi College seems to have finally devised a smart way to tell its students how deep in trouble they are.

One of the first attempts by a college here to give students a chance to keep a tab on their performance, a new intranet system to be put in place at Gargi will now allow them to not just get details of their internal assessment but also give them a chance to upload the data for placement purposes later.

A major initiative that hopes to give students the ability to improve their performance on the basis of the information available to them, the system will work with the help of a special card reader that will come in the form of a smart card. This card will give students access to their internal assessment scores and their attendance.

"As of now students will be able to access the details only from the college as it is just an intranet system. But in the years to come, we are hoping to upload the details too. And in that case, students will be able to use their smart card from any part of the country,'' says the Gargi College Principal, Meera Ramachandran.

But that is clearly not the only advantage that the students are likely to get. The college is also planning to help students use the system to upload their personal data on the net to get easy placement. "This way students will be able to keep a tab on their placements on their own and will be able to interact with the companies on a one-on-one basis. This will make it much more interactive and helpful,'' adds Ms. Ramachandran. Identified by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a college with potential for excellence, it will also be adding a computer lab in the coming weeks. With a computer lab almost becoming a necessity for most colleges following the recent restructuring of many traditionally popular courses, the college feels it will help students do better academically.
