NEW DELHI: In view of recent sewer deaths in the Capital, the Delhi Jal Board on Tuesday decided to enhance the insurance cover for all categories of its employees. To further strengthen its safety infrastructure, it has decided to create a new Department of Safety and Disaster Management within the water utility. At its Board meeting where the Delhi Chief Minister and DJB Chairperson, Sheila Dikshit, was also present, the water utility decided to enhance the insurance cover particularly for those doing hazardous nature of work to provide them protection against any accident. This will be done by increasing the corpus and scope of the Labour Welfare Fund to provide immediate compensation to the relatives of the affected employees. At the Board meeting, the creation of a new Department of Safety and Disaster Management was also approved to focus on implementation of an integrated plan of disaster management and for ensuring that safety measures are observed by all workers and contractors. The Department would also take help of expert consultants in augmenting the water utility's disaster management mechanism. In another interesting development, the Board has also approved the proposal for inviting international competitive bidding from experts to study the problem and suggest the best option for improving the quality of flow in the river Yamuna . For improving sewerage system, reducing pollution content and minimising leakage of water, the DJB has approved the desilting and relining of 47.5-km sewer lines.
