TIRUPATI: C.K. Jayachandra Reddy alias C.K. Babu, former Congress MLA of Chittoor, has been acquitted by the Sessions Court, Chittoor, in the sensational engineering college student's murder case. The acquittal follows the reported failure of the prosecution to prove the involvement of Babu in the alleged murder of Ravisankar Chowday in June, 2003. The Judge also released four others -- Sudheer, Babu's nephew, Rahul, Abilash, Prakash Babu, the former MLA's gunman. The case against Babu's car driver, Sheikh Sabbir, is said to be kept pending as he is still at large. Reddy's acquittal could not have been timed better coming as it did when battlelines were being drawn for municipal elections. He had been in political exile ever since his arrest and subsequent release and could not get the Congress party ticket for the last Assembly election. Though he `managed' to stay in the field as an Independent candidate, he could not make it to the Assembly as a TDP candidate eventually wrested the seat creating a serious political vacuum for the Congress in the district headquarters town and in the district.
To play pro-active role
"Now that my innocence has been proved and the court had acquitted me, I will resume with all vigour my political activities," he said and asserted that he was a Congressman for ever.
