VIJAYAWADA: The general manager of South Central Railway (SCR), D.N. Mathur, on Tuesday, said that proposals for constructing a railway line between Jaggayyapet and Vishnupuram were pending with the Railway Ministry. Replying to an appeal from the Vijayawada MP, L. Rajagopal, regarding train services, halts and inauguration of reservation counters in Vijayawada and surrounding areas, Mr. Mathur said that a decision to operate a passenger train between Vijayawada and Hyderabad would be taken very soon. Earlier, Mr. Mathur, lauded the efforts of the Vijayawada division in developing the station and keeping it clean. "Maintenance of retiring rooms and dormitories is good. People cannot get an air-conditioned dormitory at a rent of Rs. 115 a day anywhere in the city except at the railway station," he said.
More restaurants planned
Two more restaurants would come up at the railway station in addition to the existing one located near the main entrance, Mr. Mathur said. "Andhra food will be served at one restaurant, while the other will have a menu of north Indian dishes," he said, adding that high quality food would be served at the restaurants. Referring to the installation of platform ticket issuing machines at the station, the General Manager said that the facility would be extended to some other stations shortly. A facelift would be given to the 8th, 9th and 10th platforms of Vijayawada railway station, where food stalls and coffee and tea vending machines would be installed. Mr. Mathur inspected the platforms and interacted with some passengers to get first hand information on functioning of the division. He asked the Divisional Railway Manager, J.N. Jagannath, to have the sitting area at the main entrance renovated. The GM suggested that soaps be made available in toilets in the waiting halls.
