NIZAMABAD: The member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Devender, has stressed the need for stringent action against the persons involved in atrocities against SCs/STs in the country. Reviewing the welfare and rehabilitation programmes initiated by the administration for the Scheduled Castes in the district on Tuesday, he said that the Government was contemplating introducing a bill in Parliament in this connection. He also suggested the district administration to provide irrigation sources and power connections for beneficiaries selected under the land purchase scheme. The Collector, D.V Rayudu, explained the welfare measures taken up for the uplift of SCs in the district. He said that they were conducting the civil rights day on the 30th of every month. He said that a total of 101 SC atrocities cases were registered in the district during the last five years and they had provided relief amount of Rs 44.80 lakhs to 154 victims. He said that they had disbursed Rs 1.2 crore to SCs under the SGRY schemes during the last financial year. There were a total of 20,000 SHGs in the district, including 6,000 SHGs exclusively belonging to the SCs. He said that they had provided financial assistance of Rs 5.6 crores to the SCs' self-help groups under the linkage scheme. The DRDA project director, China Tataiah, and others were present.
