Staff Reporter

Metropolis will help Nawaloka Hospital set up world-class lab facilities in the island nation

CHENNAI: : Metropolis Health Services, a corporate diagnostics centres chain in India, will help Nawaloka Hospital to set up world-class diagnostic laboratories in Sri Lanka by next month.

Nawaloka Hospital was built in 1985 and was "the first private tertiary hospital to introduce modern diagnostic technology such as the MRI and CT scanner," according to Lal G. Chandrasena, director of the Colombo-based Nawaloka Hospitals. Initially, Metropolis will upgrade the existing laboratories in the hospital's 10 centres. Nawaloka Metropolis will focus on positioning itself as the high-end referral laboratory in Sri Lanka with a tertiary central laboratory at the Hospital's Colombo centre.

Besides managing laboratories, in the next two years, Metropolis and Nawaloka Hospitals will build 20 primary care centres in areas where primary care is weak. The aim is to bring specialised tests at affordable prices, said professor Chandrasena. The hospitals already have a tie up with Madras Medical Mission for paediatric cardiac surgery and Mother's Love, a fertility centre. For medical education they have tied up with Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

Sushil Shah, chairman of Metropolis said the company would soon have laboratories in Kolkata and Hyderabad. The company proposes to use the IT method to duplicate its laboratory service work abroad.
