NEW DELHI: Even though most of the Bharatiya Janata Party's allies in the National Democratic Alliance have adopted a "wait and watch" approach on the fallout of the BJP president L.K. Advani's resignation, top leaders of the Janata Dal (United) are meeting here on Thursday to review the situation. Even as JD(U) president George Fernandes met Mr. Advani late in the evening to request him to reconsider his move, party sources said that the NDA would come under strain if some "extremist element" were to take over the reins of the BJP. Observers pointed out that while remaining with the BJP might be a political compulsion for the JD(U), leaders such as Sharad Yadav and Nitish Kumar had time and again tried to assert their secular credentials. In fact, just before the Parliamentary elections last April, there was a sharp divide on remaining with the BJP. The presence Mr. Fernandes at BJP functions has also come in for criticism, but the Bihar elections have acted as a binding factor and kept the party intact. Speaking to The Hindu , chairman of the Parliamentary Board Sharad Yadav said that though the episode was an "internal matter" of the BJP, the JD (U) was meeting to review the situation. What Mr. Advani had said in Pakistan was addressed to the Pakistani junta and was in line with India's foreign policy of taking the recent friendship moves forward.
