TIRUCHI: : The need for propagating the principles laid down by ancient scriptures and sastras, which led man to the path of spirituality, was reiterated by erudite Sanskrit scholars at a function organised by the Srimad Andavan Ashramam in Srirangam as part of the 71st birthday celebrations of Srimad Andavan Sri Ranga Ramanuja Mahadesikan Swami on Tuesday.

Thirtyeight Sanskrit scholars, including an octogenarian, well versed in different schools of philosophy were honoured in recognition of their exhaustive research and contributions to Hindu philosophy and `Sastras.' The scholars, who hailed from different parts of the country including New Delhi, Mumbai, Tirupathi and Bangalore, were each conferred titles and awarded a citation and cash purse.

Noted Sanskrit scholar, Krishna Premi, said that mankind could gain entry into the spiritual world, only by adhering to the values codified in Sastras. The only way to protect the ancient scriptures and Vedas was by protecting and encouraging Sanskrit scholars and by creating awareness among the common people by organising functions.

He also appealed to the public to do their bit towards the well-being of the several Sanskrit scholars, who, despite their mastery and scholarliness, were leading a poverty-stricken life.

Srimad Narayana Jeer of the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple and Sri Chinna Jeer from Tirupathi, were also present.

According to R. Rajagopal, Chairman of the National Executive Committee, 143 scholars have been honoured so far.

The Ashramam would donate Rs.2.2 lakhs to the Sankara Netralaya to be utilised for the distribution of free spectacles to the needy all over the country.

Release of books authored by Srimad Andavan formed another highlight of the celebrations.
