Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in parts of Ayyappanthangal, Koyambedu, Kondithope and Pondeswaram on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work.

Cess payment

The Chennai Collector has asked property owners in the city with landed property measuring less than two grounds to pay up their quit rent and local cess.

A press release said the property owners could pay the levies directly at the respective tahsildar's office. The tahsildars could be contacted for further details.

Career counselling

The University of Madras National Service Scheme will conduct a free career counselling programme the students of Std. X and XII who have failed in the public examinations. Psychologists will conduct the career counselling. The programme aims to impart self-confidence, life orientation, achievement motivation, goal setting and decision making skills. It will be conducted at the D.G. Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam between 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 12.

Planetarium closure

The B.M. Birla Planetarium of the Periyar Science and Technology Centre campus will remain closed to the public on June 8 for periodic general maintenance of the Planetarium projector and its accessories. However, the permanent science exhibition at the Periyar Science and Technology Centre will function as usual.

Medical programme

The Respiratory Research Foundation of India conducted a chest medicine and continuing medical education programme on Sunday. Dr. V. Kumaraswamy, Deputy Director, Tuberculosis Research Centre and Dr. Gayathri, Pulmonologist, Apollo Hospital participated. Students from the Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College, Trissur Medical College, CMC, Vellore, Calicut Medical College, ITM, Chennai participated in the quiz programme.

Dr. R. Narasimhan, chairman of the Foundation said they had been conducting the chest medicine quiz for the past three years. The first prize went to Dr. John Jose of CMC, Vellore and the second prize went to Dr. Mohanan C. Manjakarai of the Institute of Chest Diseases, Kozhikode. The programme was sponsored by Sun Pharma Radiant.

`Cooking for concern'

Concern India Foundation is organising a `Cooking for Concern' event on June 10 at Hotel Ambassador Pallava. The `main course' gets under way from 10 a.m. to noon and the desserts section is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The participation fee is Rs. 400 per dish. Seminar

A one-day seminar on bio-diesel jatropha, stevia, chenna and aloevera cultivation will be organised by Naveena Velaanmai on June 12 at Hotel Peninsula, 51, G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar. Car break-in

In Mylapore, the car of a physician from Kancheepuram was broken open and Rs. 10,000 in cash and credit cards were stolen from the vehicle.
