COIMBATORE: : The Communist Party of India has planned a road-roko agitation against the Southern Railway for the inordinate delay in executing some of the "vital pending projects for Coimbatore." The Coimbatore MP, K. Subbarayan, will lead the agitation to be staged at Singanallur on June 22. The Executive Committee meeting of the District Unit of the Communist Party of India held here recently decided to organise a series of agitations in protest against the "indifference of the Southern Railway" in completing some of the pending projects, which are progressing at a "snail's pace".
Work completed
The projects under focus would include the Rail-Over Bridges (RoBs) at Ondipudur on Tiruchi Road and at Ukkadam near Valankulam. The Highways Department has already completed its share of work and the road could not be thrown open for traffic since the railways was delaying the construction of its share of work for several months. Similarly, the vehicles bound for Pollachi, Palakkad and other areas from the City are forced to take the Town Hall and Vincent Road stretch, thus, leading to a heavy traffic snarl. Similarly, the railway administration would be urged to focus on expediting the ongoing Coimbatore - Irugur railway line doubling work. The bottleneck had led to delayed operation of trains (both incoming and outgoing) besides forcing diversion of some of the sought after trains to Irugur from Podanur skipping Coimbatore. The agitation would also press for expediting a proposal to establish a separate railway division for Coimbatore and other areas with Salem as headquarters. The other demand would be to urge the railway administration to take over the Somasundara Mill and Kaleeswara Mill Roads. The party has also decided to organise dharnas at five centres on June 20 to press for the immediate implementation of the Kolappan Committee recommendations. The MP will also lead another agitation at Aatuppalam on June 24 in protest against the dumping of garbage at Vellalore compost yard.
