KOCHI: The UDF Government will have to face a few more by-elections, in addition to the one that may be held at Cherthala, said K. Muraleedharan, State president of the National Congress (Indira).

If the Government decides to announce a package for Cherthala, it will have to announce packages for a few more constituencies in the State, hinting that the party may make MLAs supporting it to resign and force the Government go for by-elections, Mr. Muraleedharan said.

The State executive of the party, which will meet in Thiruvananthapuram on June 11, will take some crucial decisions in this regard, he said.

Antony criticised

"If the Government delays the civic body elections, the party will create a situation where the Ministers will not be able to move freely in the State. The four-year rule of the UDF Government under A.K. Antony led to the failure of all the Congress candidates in the last Parliament election, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's rule presented the highest margin to the LDF candidate at Koothuparamba," he said.

Mr. Antony escaped to Rajya Sabha realising that the UDF had no future.

Now he would become a Minister with the support of Marxists, Mr. Muraleedharan said.

The youth wing of the party would organise a rally in Kollam on August 9, he said.

Party leaders N. Venugopal, K.P. Kunjikannan, Kodoth Govindan Nair and M.A. John were among those who attended.
