THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The District Medical Officer (DMO) has appealed to people to be on the guard against infectious diseases such as diarrhoea, jaundice, leptospirosis and vector-borne diseases including dengue fever, malaria and Japanese encephalitis during the monsoon. In 2003, 42 cases of cholera, 177 cases of malaria, 73 cases of leptospirosis and 785 cess of dengue fever were reported. In 2004, cholera cases dropped to 12, malaria cases went up to 234, leptospirosis cases went up to 133 and the number of dengue fever cases came down to 336. In 2005, cholera cases have not been reported so far in the district. But 39 cases of malaria, 27 cases of leptospirosis and 59 cases of dengue fever have been reported. Efforts towards hygiene and sanitation will certainly pay off in keeping infectious and vector-borne diseases at bay. People should take care to keep their surroundings clean so that there are no breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Only hygienically cooked food should be consumed and water should be boiled well, a press release issued by the DMO said. The district health administration has conveyed a meeting of doctors and health workers in taluks and blocks to discuss the steps to be taken to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases.
