Ghastly sight: The mangled remains of the jeep, lorry and motorcycle involved in the accident in the city on Tuesday.
VISAKHAPATNAM: Failure of brakes of a lorry laden with LPG refills resulted in an accident, in which two persons were killed and six others were injured, near Gurdwara Junction here on Tuesday afternoon. The scene of the accident presented a ghastly picture with the lorry crushing a jeep, belonging to St. Joseph's Hospital, Malkapuram, and six two-wheelers crushed by the two vehicles. A tree was uprooted, snapping power supply lines. One person riding a motorcycle died on the spot as he was caught under the wheels of the lorry, while another person, a vendor, who bartered scrap metal for peanuts and was knocked down in the accident, succumbed to a head injury shortly after being shifted to a nearby hospital, according to the Fourth Town Police.
Failure of brakes
The identity of the victim was not yet established, said the Sub-Inspector (traffic) of the IV Town Police Station, K. Tirupati Rao. Search was also on to nab the lorry driver, who ran away from the spot, he added. It was reported that the brakes of the lorry failed as it was coming down the gradient road adjacent to the Gurdwara. The driver was reportedly shouting that the brakes had failed, as the vehicle came hurtling down the road. The lorry first knocked down the motorcycle and its driver was caught under its wheels. The jeep was hit from behind by the lorry, and both vehicles knocked down five two-wheelers either parked in front of the roadside mechanic shop or moving on the road. The lorry also hit a car from behind. The vendor was also knocked down. The nearby shopkeepers and pedestrians informed the police and fire brigade, and immediately started helping the injured. With great difficulty two nuns, Fatima and Vimala, sitting in the rear seat of the jeep and the driver, Appa Rao, could be extricated from the badly mangled vehicle. A scooter mechanic, Sreenu, and his cousin, Manibabu, who came to the city from Narsipatnam to spend the summer vacation, received injuries. Another motorcycle rider, Ch. Rama Mohana Rao, was injured while a cobbler, who was sitting by the roadside was lucky to escape without any injury.
