NEW DELHI: Four minor girls were killed and five others, including a one-month-old baby, seriously injured in a gas cylinder blast at Kapashera in South-West Delhi on Tuesday. The injured have been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. According to fire service officials, the incident occurred around 5-15 a.m. when a gas cylinder kept in a Samalkha village house at Kapashera exploded when one of the occupants, Manju (22), tried to light the stove to make tea. At the time, her sister-in-law, Urmila (24), was sweeping the floor. The blast was so mighty that the occupants were trapped in the fire. Manju, Urmila, her husband, Ravi, their children, Manisha (3), Varsha (2) and the one-month-old girl, Baby, their relative, Rekha (22) and her children, Poonam (3) and Sneha (2) sustained serious injuries. Manju's husband, Avinash, escaped unhurt. The police said Manisha and Varsha succumbed to their burn injuries on the spot, while others were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital after the area residents called them up and the Fire Department. Poonam and Sneha, who had sustained serious burns, later succumbed during the treatment. The police said Ravi was discharged after treatment but the other injured were stated to be in serious condition. Initial investigations revealed that the cylinder exploded due to gas leakage.
