BSNL to take part in Kaun Banega...

Staff Reporter

Platform to bring the `hot seat' to the rooms of viewers

NEW DELHI: After enthusiastic viewers voted for their "Indian Idol'', next on the list to involve their viewers is the much-awaited "Kaun Banega Crorepati 2''. While most viewers would not get a chance to sit in the "hot seat'' opposite the host Amitabh Bachchan, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has now provided a platform -- Intelligent Network Platform -- to take the hot seat to the homes of faithful viewers.

Through this value-added service -- Televoting Services -- provided by BSNL, viewers have to just dial a pre-defined number to register their vote or participate in a particular contest. The number, provided by the surveyor -- in this case Star Plus -- would have the last two digits that would define the choice of the viewer. "In this way, the surveyor can know the total number of calls and the calls for a particular option at any point of time. For the viewer, this is much easier as they just have to dial a number and hear the announcement. They can answer single choice questions and even multiple choice ones. And they get instant feedback,'' said Joint Deputy Director General (Business Development) of BSNL, Premjit Lal.

Set up about four to five months ago, the platform now has a capacity to take about 12 lakh calls per hour. This has been increased from 4 lakh per hour and is likely to be further upgraded to 18 lakh per hour by the end of June.

For KBC 2, BSNL is expecting a huge response. With votes already being registered, BSNL has received an average of 6.5 lakh calls per hour. In case of "Indian Idol'' about 3.5 crore calls were received during the last few days of voting.

Even more attractive for the viewers, each call would be a local call. The charges for registering a vote would be Rs. 2.40 per call in the case of KBC 2. This can differ according to the surveyor and can also be free of cost. "For KBC, Airtel would charge Rs. 6 per SMS and call to register a vote. In comparison, by using our service, the call would be much cheaper,'' said Mr. Lal. Other serials also using the platform include "Dial One'' and "Dance Dance''.
