PALAKKAD: About 300 people who marched from Kannimari in Chittur to the Coca-Cola bottling unit at Plachimada demanding its closure were arrested by the police on Wednesday. The police had to use force when the agitators turned violent and tried to forcibly open the gates of the company. The arrested were released later. The march was organised jointly by the Plachimada Solidarity Committee and the Coca-Cola Virudha Samara Samiti. Addressing the agitators in front of the factory gates, Solidarity Committee chairman R. Ajayan said the agitation would continue till the company was closed. Even though the Perumatty grama panchayat issued licence to the company, the agitators would not allow it to function as it deprived the local people of their water sources.
