JAMMALAMADUGU: In a gory accident, 11 persons were charred to death when a low-lying live 11 kV electric line fell on an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus at Ponnampalle village in Mylavaram mandal, Cuddapah district, on Wednesday. Two Government teachers Thippabarthi Anjali Devi (28) and Uttalkal Chandrasekhara Rao (52) and the village secretary of Ramachandrayapalle, Venkatasivaiah (38), who were travelling in the bus to attend the `Badi Baata' programme, were among those dead. Two of the victims were Intermediate students Anakala Moulali and Nakka Goverdhan. A plastic pitcher vendor, Balagolla Giddamma (27) of Humannagar in Proddatur, who was taking about 200 pitchers atop the bus, Gokula Rayappa (41), Medigam Peeramma (10), Nallasingu Balagurrappa (43), Theetla Bhaskar (50) and Pothinti Babu (27) were the other victims. The 36 passengers panicked on suffering a mild shock when the power line touched the top portion of the bus. On the driver, M. Venkateswarlu's advice, 12 passengers jumped out after breaking the rear glass panes. The driver and two others jumped out of the door near the driver's seat. The rest who tried to alight through the entrance lost their lives. Moulali tried to get down with one foot in the bus and another foot on the ground that led to earthing, according to the police. Moulali's feet were burnt and the electricity passed through the bus. Ten others preparing to get down were flung out by the force of the electric current. The sight of the bodies one over the other in a heap was gruesome. A fire tender put out the flames and the police shifted the bodies to the Government hospital, which was 12 km away. There were heart-rending scenes at the hospital with hundreds of villagers and relatives of the victims wailing inconsolably as they awaited the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's arrival. But, the in-charge Collector, Kanthilal Dande, and the Proddatur MLA, N. Varadarajulu Reddy, announced cancellation of Dr. Reddy's visit due to a technical snag in his helicopter.
YSR shocked
Our Hyderabad Reporter writes: Expressing shock at the death, the Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs each to the next of kin of the victims. He asked the Collector to probe into the circumstances that led to the tragedy. In a press release here, he said that preliminary information indicated that the bus was carrying luggage in excess of the permitted height.
