BHUBANESWAR: Tension prevailed in the town of Champua in Orissa's Keonjhar district after the death of a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh supporter in police firing on Wednesday afternoon. Dilip Mahanta was killed on the spot and four persons were injured when police opened fire on a crowd that allegedly attacked a police station, demanding action against a 36-year-old man, who attempted to rape a minor tribal girl on June 3. Two policemen were also injured. The protesters were mostly supporters of the RSS, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal. Police resorted to firing after lathi-charge and teargas could not disperse the crowd. Vehicles of presspersons parked near the police station were also damaged. The accused in the attempt-to-rape case, reportedly a Bangladeshi migrant, had injured the girl when she raised an alarm.
