DMK delegation meets Manmohan

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: A Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam delegation met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday and demanded that uplinking facilities to Jaya Television be stopped as it was broadcasting news and current affairs programmes in violation of the uplinking guidelines.

The delegation, comprising A. Raja, S.S. Palanimanikkam and Subbulakshmi Jagadeeshan, Ministers, and M.S.K. Bhavani Rajenthiran, MP, in a memorandum, also requested Dr. Singh to instruct the Union Finance Ministry to inquire into the credentials of the shareholders of Jaya TV and their connection with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. The memorandum said many of the shareholders were suspected to be foreign nationals and, if so, the business of satellite television broadcasting being conducted by the company Mavis Satcom Limited would be illegal and a violation of the rules. Later, the delegation met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and presented a memorandum.
