Centre may import wheat to improve supply

By Gargi Parsai

No plan to reduce quota to ration cardholders or increase issue price

  • Good monsoon will ward off imports
  • Stocks no cause for worry: Pawar
  • Purchase from many sources

NEW DELHI: The Centre may import wheat, if necessary, to improve supply in the market. However, there is no proposal to reduce the allocation of foodgrains to ration cardholders or increase the issue price under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS).

Wheat imports may not be required if there is a good monsoon and there is no substantial requirement of foodgrains under the food-for-work programme.

Indicating this here on Wednesday, Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said there was no cause for worry over availability of stocks
