CHIKMAGALUR: The entry of the KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, and some others into the sanctum sanctorum of the Dattatreya Peetha shrine in Bababudangiri on Monday has raised a storm of protests. Mr. Poojary visited the shrine accompanied by C.R. Sageer Ahmed, former Minister, B.L. Ramdas, District Congress Committee President, and other Congress leaders to inspect development works taken up by the district administration. M.K. Pranesh, President of the district unit of the BJP, demanded that all those who illegally entered the shrine be arrested. Pointing out that cases had been registered against BJP legislators when they offered prayers at the shrine, Mr. Pranesh accused the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) of trying to gain political mileage out of the issue. The Communist Party of India has condemned the Congress leaders for illegally entering the shrine. In a press release, the CPI urged the Deputy Commissioner to initiate legal proceedings against those who entered the shrine as well as the Muzrai official who allowed them to do so.
