KOTTAYAM: National Congress (Indira) president K. Muraleedharan has hinted at the possibility of MLAs owing allegiance to him putting in their papers to force elections in more than half a dozen Assembly segments in case the Election Commission heeds the call from the State Government to hold byelections in Cherthala.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, the NC(I) chief said the Government in spite of putting up a brave front was not inclined to hold byelections in the Cherthala Assembly segment, which has been rendered vacant following the resignation of the former Chief Minister A.K. Antony owing to his election to the Rajya Sabha.

"In case the Election Commission takes a decision favouring the byelection, it would have to hold elections in more than five Assembly segments along with it," Mr. Muraleedharan said, hinting that MLAs supporting him would resign from the House.

No truck with BJP

Responding to a question, he said his party had no reservation about entering into political alliance with any of the constituents of the NDA, other than the BJP.

Neither did the party find the Left Front untouchable, he said. Mr Muraleedharan remained non-committal on the issue of the reported unity moves with the Kerala Congress (Jacob).

Earlier, the NC(I) chief, inaugurating the first district convention of the party, said any move to postpone the elections to the local bodies would invite strong reaction from the party activists.

"We will not allow the Chief Minister and the Ministers out of their houses. We will waylay them until elections are announced," he said.

Mr. Muraleedharan did not spare the Congress high command either in his speech.

He said both the state leadership and the national leadership of the party were undemocratic in their functioning.

He alleged that it was owing to All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi's lack of leadership quality that Bihar was forced to go in for another election.

District NC(I) president K.K. Abraham presided over.
