ANANTAPUR: The Guntakal police have busted a fake currency and education certificates racket and arrested five persons allegedly involved in the illegal activity. The police have seized fake currency notes worth about Rs. one lakh and more than 10,000 certificates for various degrees and diplomas offered by several universities. Two computers, a colour printer and more than 100 rubber stamps have also been seized from the house of the key suspect, Glain Briggs, an Anglo-Indian. The Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, told newspersons here on Wednesday that a police team led by the Guntakal DSP, K.V. Mohan Rao, the Guntakal urban CI, D.V. Ramana Murthy, and the Guntakal One Town SI, E. Srinivasulu, raided the house of Briggs on Tuesday evening and caught him along with two accomplices -- Sai Narayana and A. Ramachandra -- red-handed when they were printing fake currency notes. Briggs, known for preparing and selling fake education certificates, was arrested several times in the past and the cases were pending in different courts. Fake currency notes worth more than Rs. one lakh in the denominations of Rs. 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 and one side printed note of Rs. 50 were seized from his house. On the information given by Briggs, the police also raided another house in Guntakal on Tuesday night and seized more than 10,000 fake educational certificates, more than a hundred rubber stamps and other material used for forgery of certificates. The fake certificates seized pertained to SSC, Intermediate, degree and diploma courses offered by Annamalai, Sri Venkataswara, Sri Krishnadevaraya, Gulbarga, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Madras, JNTU, Osmania, Bangalore, and Visveswarayya Technological universities.
Other certificates
Besides, fake certificates and marks memos of Telugu Pandit, ITI and nursing courses were also recovered from his house. The SP stated that Briggs used to sell the certificates at rates ranging from Rs. 3,000 to 10,000 each. Two others, Mohammed and Gulab, who allegedly assisted Briggs in preparing fake certificates, were also arrested.
