Need to `educate' boys

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Emphasising the need to educate boys to ensure a drop in crime against girls, Magsaysay Award winner Kiran Bedi on Wednesday said there was an increasing need to sensitise boys to maintain a balance in society.

Speaking at the national award function of the International Poster Contest organised by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) here, Dr. Bedi commended the effort to encourage children's creativity through the poster-making contest. An exhibition of the selected posters was also held on the occasion.

Stressing the role of teachers in the learning process, Dr. Bedi said students should also be taught mind management.

Describing it as one of the most important programmes of the Council that involves direct interaction with the children, NCERT Director Krishna Kumar said justice for women -- one of the underlying themes of the contest -- had become a major challenge for human civilisation and education has a central role to play in the process.

Being organised by NCERT since 1992, the International Poster Contest is sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and focuses on specific themes, with those for the year 2004 being `Imagine the Future', `A Mother's Promise' and `Celebrating Equality and Empowerment'. This year, 12 students were chosen under four different age categories following a two-tier selection process from 9,548 entries that were received from all over India.
