NEW DELHI: Buddhist leaders on Wednesday demanded a review of the 2001 census data on the community, saying the figures could have been "underenumerated'' in the last exercise by the Registrar-General & Census Commissioner. They urged the National Commission for Minorities to make a representation to the Government. As the census figures formed the basis of policy decisions, the Buddhist leaders did not want to wait for the 2011 census to correct any distortion, said Ashish Bose, chairman of the expert committee set up by the NCM to analyse the First Report on Religion Data. He was briefing mediapersons after a meeting with the Commission here. NCM Chairman Tarlochan Singh said the Commission would approach the Registrar-General & Census Commissioner and the Home Ministry for a review. Dr. Bose said the Central Statistical Organisation or the National Sample Survey Organisation should do the review. It would be best to go in for a sample survey or a thorough review of the data collected in the 2001 census by an independent body other than the Registrar-General.
