BANGALORE: The new Commissioner of Police, Ajai Kumar Singh, on Wednesday said he would accord priority to enhance the sense of security in the public's minds. After taking charge from the outgoing Commissioner of Police, S. Mariswamy, Dr. Singh told presspersons that the police would have more friendly relationship with the public and be more sympathetic to women and children. He said the jurisdictional police would be held responsible if anti-social elements tried to have an "upper hand" in their areas. "We will instil the fear of law among the anti-social elements and a sense of safety among the law-abiding citizens," he said. Referring to the traffic woes in the city, Dr. Singh said the police would come out with a comprehensive road safety education programme. Steps would be taken to ensure "pointed enforcement" of the traffic rules, he added. The helplines for children and women, Makkala Sahaya Vani and Mahila Sahaya Vani, at the Commissioner's office would be strengthened and such helplines would be started at police stations too, he said. "We will also take up welfare activities for policemen, particularly constables, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors," Dr. Singh said. He said though he had worked in various wings of the city police earlier, heading the unit was a different experience. "We have dedicated officers and we will work as a team. We will keep the State police flag flying high," he said. Mr. Mariswamy said he was happy to hand over charge to a "fine officer." "I am sure the safety and security of the city will be well taken care of by Dr. Singh," he remarked.
