BANGALORE: The Leader of the Opposition in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council, B.R. Nanjundappa, on Wednesday criticised the ruling Congress in the civic body for not inviting fresh tenders for garbage clearance though the term of the existing ones ended on May 31. He told presspersons that it was unfortunate that the term of the contracts had been extended. "When we had reminded the Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, about the new tenders and he had promised to call for new ones before the term of existing ones ended. But he has failed to keep the promise," he said. Mr. Nanjundappa pointed out that it would take at least a year for the new tenders to be approved by the Standing Committee on Health and the Council. "We are wondering if the contractors would be allowed to continue till then. If it is done, the BMP will incur a loss," he said. About the cancellation of the road-maintenance contracts on the charge that the private contractors had failed to maintain the roads "efficiently", Mr. Nanjundappa said, "The decision to outsource maintenance of roads was taken by the ruling Congress. We (Janata Dal -Secular) had opposed the proposal, as our engineers are capable of maintaining the roads better than the private contractors. It is good that the BMP has realised it now." He pointed out that the private contracts for maintenance of streetlights had also been extended without inviting tenders. Reacting to Mr. Nanjundappa's criticism, the Mayor has said that the BMP had the powers to extend the garbage contract by a year. This clause is mentioned in the tender condition of the existing contract. But the delay is because of the ongoing work on setting up scientific landfill and dumping yard for the city's garbage, the Mayor added.
