Advani & parivar politics

Mr. Advani seems to have realised that Hindutva cannot take him or the BJP far. To change tack, he utilised the Pakistan visit to paint himself in a secular colour. Shrewd politician that he is, he reacted to the Sangh Parivar's outburst by sounding the clapboard in a bid to determine who is superior. It is now only a question of who will blink first.

K.V. Rao,
Hyderabad

For having spoken the `truth' — which he knew would pay electoral dividends — Mr. Advani need not have resigned. If he withdraws his resignation bowing to the wishes of his partymen, the drama will be complete.

J. Ravi,
Bangalore

Mr. Advani's glowing tributes to Jinnah have understandably triggered an unprecedented turmoil within his own party and the Parivar. As the BJP is founded on Hindutva, Mr. Advani stirred a hornets' nest by making a statement that runs contrary to it. But by resigning as president, he has taken the wind out of the sails of his embarrassed detractors.

M.V. Ravindran,
Ahmedabad

The RSS and the VHP have created an unnecessary furore over Mr. Advani's comments. It is customary to speak a good word about the leaders of the host country. That is precisely what Mr. Advani did and there is also some element of truth in what he said about Jinnah. Jinnah was not religious and the criteria for Partition was not religion but power tussle.

Y.V. Subba Rao,
Hyderabad

Though politicians have a habit of retracting their statements, Mr. Advani has done well to stand by his claim on Jinnah.

G. Abdul Haseeb,
Chennai
