This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru, now in the Soviet Union, had a round of formal engagements to fulfil on June 8. He called on the Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr. Molotov, early in the morning and later had talks with Marshal Bulganin, the Soviet Premier. Before going round the Kremlin for sight-seeing, Mr. Nehru laid wreaths at the mausoleums of Lenin and Stalin at the Red Square. He was deeply struck by the care bestowed on the preservation of the bodies of the two great Russian leaders. The Soviet Government has a proposal to build a pantheon where the bodies and ashes of great national leaders will be kept. A large crowd had gathered in the Red Square to have a glimpse of Mr. Nehru. They cheered him as he drove past. Inside the Kremlin, he was shown the relics of Czarist splendour. Crowds of tourists from different parts of the world, who were also there, burst into cheers when they recognised Mr. Nehru. Apart from the fact that Mr. Nehru has been put up at a beautiful villa, 15 miles away from Moscow amidst luxurious woods, no further information is officially available as to its location. The veil of secrecy drawn even over things which in India may not evoke any particular interest is apt to irritate a stranger unfamiliar with local tradition. But it is explained that security measures which are not unusual when distinguished visitors arrive must be enforced even if it became necessary to withhold information from journalists.
