NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has asked its Special Rapporteur, A.B. Tripathy, to inquire into a newspaper report, `Lathicharge on tribals kills babies too' in Orissa, and submit a report within two weeks. It has taken suo motu cognisance of the report in an English newspaper dated May 17. The report said that on May 9 about 5,000 tribals from Kalinganagar gathered to protest against non-payment of dues for land acquired for the construction of steel plants and delay in rehabilitation by the State Government. They were "brutally assaulted by the police" and four tribals, including two children were killed. Many who were injured in the alleged lathicharge were reported to be in a critical condition. The report said a young girl, who was severely beaten up by the police, was still missing. The police arrested 26 persons, 25 of them women. Criminal cases were registered against 300 tribals under the IPC.
