NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission, taking suo motu cognisance of a news report on the rescue of more than 400 child labourers from zari units in central Mumbai last week, has asked the Maharashtra Government to reply within two weeks on follow-up action taken. It has asked the Chief Secretary to provide information about the action taken after the raids conducted on June 1 and whether the children were produced before any Child Welfare Committee. The NHRC has directed that the media report, which said that about 150 policemen, in coordination with NGOs, rescued close to 400 child labourers working in zari, leather and steel workshops from Madanpura, be presented to the Chief Secretary. According to the report, the police combed 220 workshops and rescued the children, who came from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and even Nepal. The police arrested 42 employers who would be charged under the Juvenile Justice Act, the Child Labour Act and the Indian Penal Code. The commission observed that if the contents of the report were true, they raised serious issue of violation of human rights of children and their exploitation.
