CHENNAI: Five major textile retailing giants from Australia plan to open offices this year in India to source their requirements. The retailers conveyed their plans during the visit of a 12-member delegation from the Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce to Australia recently, according to C. Sarat Chandran, director of the chamber. Mr. Chandran said the chamber would be working with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Western Australia to recruit engineers from India on a broad range of skills, including civil construction, oil and gas, mining and mechanical engineering, to work in Western Australia. The chamber delegation received requests from nine Australian companies seeking partners for outsourcing operations. The companies operate in several areas, including financial services, superannuating services, legal transcription, airline and health services. At present, 12 Australian companies have outsourcing contracts in India. These include ANZ Information Technology, Lumley Technology, Axa and Total Super. Apart from the Australian states of Victoria and South Australia, which have plans to open trade office in Bangalore and Chennai, respectively, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia is expected to upgrade its representative office in Bangalore to the branch status. Technical and Further Education (TAFE), the Australian vocational training network was seeking joint ventures to train Indian construction workers. Stating that the chamber was discussing with Australian industry the scope for attracting investment in development of city infrastructure and processing of fruits and vegetables, he said the chamber would be taking a delegation to the international conference on bio- technology in Perth in November. A manufacturing mission from Victoria is scheduled to visit Chennai in December to source auto components and products related to the construction industry.
