BANGALORE: Kerala and Tamil Nadu oarsmen, in the sub junior category, showed their rich tradition in the sport of rowing with some impressive performances even as heats and repechages were gone through, on the opening day of the four-day eighth sub junior and 10th challengers sprint and super sprint national rowing championship, which commenced at the Ulsoor lake here on Thursday. The championship, which was inaugurated by Brig. J.J. Manavalan, Commandant MEG and Centre, Bangalore, saw a plethora of heats (75 races for the day) to identify the quarter finalists in most of the events. Kerala girls in the double scull and boys in the coxed four did stand out as did Tamil Nadu teams while Maharashtra boys `B' teams shrugged aside some stiff challenge in the double sculls and coxed four to make the grade. Teams from Madhya Pradesh and Orissa hardly broke a sweat but surely emerged richer by the experience. In the Challengers category (open to all) the Army units, Services and Corps of Engineers, looked streets ahead of the rest.
