Chennai: Of the two categories, the boys section promises a fierce contest in the last five rounds of the 19th Indian Bank-Vels National under-9 chess championship played at the Vels College of Arts & Science in Pallavaram, Chennai.

"We expect the title in the girls section. The boys group is very closely fought," said J. Subrahmanyam, manager of the Andhra Pradesh team from Guntur.

Lakshman Rao is the trainer of A.R. Priya, the leader in the girls section. Both come from Eluru. Andhra has continued its recent domination of the girls section.

Every half point is going to matter in the boys group as three players are tied for the top place with 5.5 points.

The standings after six rounds:

Boys: 1-3: Girish A. Koushik (Kar), S. Kausik (TN), G.V. Sai Krishna (AP) 5.5/6 each, 4-6: Y.V.K. Chakravarthy, Pani Bhushan (both AP), Shiven Khosla (Mah) 5 each, 7-18: V. Varun (AP), Utkal Ranjan (Ori), S.V. Srinath Rao (Cha), Gireman J (TN), Abhilash Reddy, Deepthamsh Reddy, J.V.S. Kiran, Arvinda Kumar (all AP), Karma Pandya (Guj), Sayantan Das, Chandrashish Majumdar (both WB), Kumar Sanu (Jha) 4.5 each.

Girls: 1: A.R. Priya (AP) 6/6, 2-4: K.Deepika (AP), G. Uma Bharathi (TN), Sweety Patel (Guj) 5 each, 5-10: J. Sahari, Gomini Shreya, G. Aiswarya, C.H. Sahajasri (all AP), Nisha Patkar (Kar), Soumya Srivastava (Mah) 4.5 each, 11-22: Chandana Priya, Navya Vyshnavi, B. Pratyusha (all AP), Michelle Catherina, Srinidhi N, P. Sujitha, M. Thejaswiny (all TN), Krupa Shiradkar, Pushpita Singh (both Goa), P. Atre (MP), M. Priyadarshini (Kar), Sibani Mishra (Ori) 4 each.
