MOSCOW: Russia is opposed to Western demands for an international probe into large-scale violence in Uzbekistan last month, Russia's defence chief said. "We are against an international investigation," Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Thursday ahead of a Russia-NATO council meeting in Brussels. NATO has called for an international investigation into armed riots in Uzbekistan's Andizhan in mid-May. "Uzbekistan is a sovereign country and its prosecutors and Government should investigate the incident themselves." Mr. Ivanov said Russia had "irrefutable evidence of a foreign connection" in the Andizhan events. Uzbekistan authorities said 173 persons died in the riots that were suppressed by the Uzbek army, but human rights groups claimed the toll was more than 500. "The idea of an international investigation is, not to establish where terrorists came from but to shift the blame on (Uzbek President Islam) Mr. Karimov and remove him in the name of democratisation," the Russian Minister said. "It is necessary to establish who inspires and staged (the riots), where the weapons seized from a military garrison have gone, and give answers to many other questions," Mr. Ivanov was quoted as saying. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier this month that the extremist Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Taliban and Chechen rebels were involved in the Andizhan revolt.
