SFI alleges expulsion of 10 students

Staff Reporter

Government yet to remit tuition fee

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Students Federation of India (SFI) has alleged that the management of Carmel Engineering College (self-financing) in Ranni-Perinad has expelled 10 second year students (eight belonging to SC/ST category and two of OEC) as the Government failed to remit their tuition fee and hostel fee for the first year.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, SFI district president C.N. Rajesh and secretary Roshan Roy Mathew alleged that the Government had not yet remitted the tuition fee and hostel fee of the 10 students to the tune of Rs. 5,89,052 as on May 30.

Mr. Roshan said that the college management had issued a notice to the students on March 23 stating that they would not be permitted to continue studying in the college if they failed to remit the tuition fee and hostel fee arrears.

The memorandum submitted by the aggrieved students to the Minister for SC/ST Welfare and the department heads concerned too failed to yield any results, leading to their "expulsion" from the classes, he alleged.

He said that the SFI would launch an agitation against the management if it failed to revoke the decision.

The Students Federation of India would stage a protest march to the engineering college soon, he added.

He said that the Government was yet to disburse the tuition and other benefits to eligible Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe students studying in various educational institutions in the district.

The SFI leaders alleged that the inordinate delay in remitting the tuition and hostel fee for the SC/ST students was part of the Government move to withdraw from the general education sector.
