PATHANAMTHITTA: The closure of the bus station in Kozhencherry town following a decision to construct a four-storeyed bus stand-cum-shopping complex here has led to traffic congestion in the town limits, causing hardship to commuters, especially students, women and the elderly. The entrance to the bus stand has been blocked by dumping a few lorry loads of rubble. The panchayat has decided to convert the panchayat stadium on the banks of the Thanungattil stream into a temporary bus stand. According to panchayat president K.K. Royson, not less than 200 buses operate services through Kozhencherry town . The proposal to construct a bus stand-cum-shopping complex on BOT basis has drawn criticism. The proposal is to construct a four-storeyed complex and KINFRA has been entrusted with the task of preparing the project report. Many people are of the view that the panchayat could have delayed the closure of the bus stand till it gets the final clearance for the proposed BOT scheme, thereby avoiding the hardship to commuters.
